About me

I’m Sara Blackshire, a freelance translator working mainly from Spanish (Spain) and Catalan into English (UK), specialising in textile handcrafts (knitting, crochet, sewing, macramé, embroidery, etc.), forestry, life sciences, and medical and pharmaceutical translations.

After working as an in-house translator in the private sector and as a project manager at a translation agency, I moved on to become a freelance translator in 2018. Since then, I have continued to learn and improve my translation skills to ensure I am providing the best quality translation service. I work with translation agencies, companies and individuals from around the world.

I have been knitting for more than 15 years and learnt how to crochet and sew in the last 5 years. I have translated many knitting, crochet and sewing patterns, so if you are a designer who would like to offer your patterns in Spanish, do get in touch.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Translation, IDEC, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (2013-2014)

This master’s degree consisted of two parts: a pharmaceutical translation module and a biomedical translation module, including master classes by experts in both fields as well as practical classes. As part of this course, I did a linguistic internship at TERMCAT.

Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona (2009-2013)

This undergraduate degree included different modules that prepared me for my career as a professional translator, such as terminology, linguistics, conference interpreting, CAT tools, etc. I specialised in scientific and technical translation, spent a study period abroad at the University of Ottawa (Canada) and completed a curricular internship at APSOCECAT.

Born to British parents in Spain, I am a bilingual native speaker of English and Spanish and have a perfect command of Catalan. I have also studied French at university level and at the Institut Français de Barcelone.

I work mostly from Spanish and Catalan into English, followed closely by English into Spanish, with French being a passive language.

RATES

I generally work on a per word basis; the cost of a translation is calculated based on the number of words in the original document. The rate can vary depending on the subject matter, level of complexity, urgency, format, etc.

PAYMENT TERMS

I accept payment by bank transfer up to 30 days after the invoicing date. You will receive the invoice by email, with the translation, stating the details of the project and the payment required.
